Barça defeat Alaves 3-1 to win 29th Copa del Rey.

FCB CDR CHAMPS 2017

FC Barcelona won the Copa del Rey for the 29th time in club history as  Luis Enrique’s era came to an end. Another marvelous performance by Messi saw Barcelona defeat Alaves 3-1 to win the cup and become the first team since the early 1950s to lift the cup three seasons running.

The final game ever to be played at Atletico Madrid’s Vicente Calderon was the venue between the Catalan and Basque side. Messi gave the Blaugrana the lead at the half hour mark. However, Alaves leveled things through Theo Hernandez’s unstoppable free kick three minutes later. Neymar though scored the go ahead goal right before halftime before Messi assisted Paco who scored in stoppage time of the first half.

Neither side would score in the second half and Barça ended the season with the Copa del Rey trophy after losing out on the league title to Real Madrid. This result means they will meet Real Madrid in the upcoming Spanish Supercopa.

Barça defeat Villarreal 4-1 as MSN surpass 100 goals.

FCB VIL 1

FC Barcelona kept pace with Real Madrid in their pursuit of the league title, by defeating Villarreal 4-1 at the Camp Nou. Neymar opened the scoring in the 20th minute by poking in the ball from close range. However, Villarreal would equalize eleven minutes later through Cedric Bakambu.

The Blaugrana retook the lead right before halftime through Messi whose deflected shot from distance snuck past the Villarreal keeper. That goal meant that Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar surpassed 100 combined goals in all competitions for the season. Furthermore, that was Messi’s 50th goal in all competitions, which is the fifth time the legend has reached that milestone.

In the second half, Luis Suarez scored Barça’s third goal of the match in the 68th minute before Messi scored the team’s fourth and final goal in the 81st minute from the spot with a well taken “Panenka”penalty. Barça’s Upcoming Four Battles.

fcb 4

Final month of football is upon us. The bitter taste of not watching Barça try to win their sixth Champions League crown is still tough to swallow. There is hope that the club can salvage the season with a domestic double. However, these remaining games are basically elimination round fixtures where one slip up ruins the double.

Barça’s final three league matches are at home to Villarreal, away to Las Palmas, before bringing down the curtains when they host Eibar. They will then meet Deportivo Alavés in the Copa del Rey Final soon afterwards. Real Madrid have four league matches left are away to Granada, hosting Sevilla, away to Celta Vigo and then away to Malaga. Perhaps Madrid will slip up in either of those matches.

FCB Depo

It’s not fun when you can’t control your destiny and Barça have themselves to blame for that following their poor result against Malaga. However, it’s too soon to throw in the towel on the season. Cruyff’s “Dream Team” showed us how beautiful it is to win the league title in the last match of the season. Yet, the 2006-2007 Barça team showed us gut wrenching it is to lose out on the title in the last match of the season while being level on points with Real Madrid.

So sit back and enjoy the ride with one eye on Barça and one eye on the scoreboard to see what Madrid is doing. Three more weeks of stress and then one week to recover before Barça play in the Copa del Rey. Hopefully it will be for a double.

If there’s ever a line from a movie that is synonymous with FC Barcelona, it has to be the line uttered in The Dark Knight. “You either die a hero, or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain.” This applies to both managers and players. We have seen managers such as Cruyff, Rijkaard, Guardiola, and now Luis Enrique be admired only to be turned on by the fans. The same applies with players who were once worshipped but then left the club through the back door. At this moment, Luis Enrique is becoming the villain as the club fails to impress on the pitch.
