The Curious Case of Samuel Eto'o PDF Print E-mail
Written by Andres Cordero

Pichichi, indomitable lion, ticking time-bomb. Samuel Eto’o is still the big African elephant in the Barcelona locker room. While Leo Messi has been the bulls-eye for most of the praise heaped on this Barça squad, Eto’o leads the chase for the European Golden Boot honor with 23 goals in 23 games (although he’s only played 22.)  Messi, Xavi, Iniesta, Bojan and Busquets have all been extended through 2014 and with Puyol, Marquez, Valdes, Gudjohnsen and Eto’o all set to expire in 2010, the Cameroon striker and the Catalan center-back top the priorities list.

A lot has changed since last summer, when Pep Guardiola said Ronaldinho, Deco and Eto’o were not in his plans, and then subsequently failed in his bid to ship the Cameroon striker out in the clearance sale that saw Dinho and Deco sent to Milan and Chelsea. Eto’o has discovered the best version of himself under Guardiola. The cynic will point out that it happens to coincide with his contract year, but we’ll let that slide and attribute it to the improved atmosphere in the Camp Nou locker room.

There are 15 games left in the campaign and Eto’o is just three goals shy of his best season total (26 in ’05-06.) Although a long-shot, he is on pace to reach 38, which would break Ronaldo’s record (34 in ’96-’97) for a Barça striker and tie Telmo Zarra (Athletic ’50-51) and Hugo Sanchez (Madrid ’89-90) for the league record.

David Villa, Benzema, Adebayor, Droba, Ibrahimovic and Mario Gomez were all mentioned as long-term replacements for Eto’o. And yet, only Gomez, Adebayor and Benzema are younger. At 27, Eto’o still has plenty of soccer left in his legs and managed to outshine all six of the aforementioned stars. Still, the talk of ‘potential replacements’ will not go away. Be it because of his volatile personality, scattered off-field issues, or reasons that remain foreign to me, many culés are still clamoring for a new ‘9.’

Feel free to tell me why. As always, you can share your thoughts below.

"If it ain't broke..." How about fool me twice, shame on me ;) He was jealous to be in Ronaldinho's shadow and is jealous of being in Messi's shadow. He seems fine for this system but I think it's over and time to get Villa. Eto'o hasn't changed and it's a matter of time till he explodes again.

I come to the conclusion there is no better forward than him and we need to renew his contract. Having said that, I hope Villa also joins Barça and hiring someone like Keirrison, young kid with future that can be loan for a year, like we did with Henrique, and then take Eto'o's place.
Eto'o May Have Matured

Eto'o is 27 years old, its possible that he's matured. Eto'o is the best striker in the world and doesn't get enough credit for his part in Barca's success. He isn't Terrell Owens, he's not a cancer in the locker room. I think he's irreplaceable.

Fair points. There's an article in Marca today detailing some of the conflicts he's had since moving to Barça. marca.com/2009/02/17/futbol/equipos/barcelona/1234887544.html

My feeling is he and Guardiola can make it work for a few more years. "If it ain't broke..."
Ego is the problem.

I love Eto'o for his dedication to the club and to be fit but he is a distraction. He has had a history of creating problems through what he says and sometimes what he says is justified and sometimes it's something that was overboard and not needed ie, Vilafranco press conference.
