Miami one of 18 finalists to host possible World Cup matches PDF Print E-mail

Written by MICHELLE KAUFMAN - Miami Herald

Miami boasts the highest U.S. television ratings for the World Cup every four years. On Tuesday, the soccer-savvy city got one big step closer to hosting the event it so passionately follows.

Fifteen years after being passed over as a World Cup host city, Miami was named by the U.S. World Cup bid committee as one of 18 finalists to hold matches in 2018 or 2022, assuming the United States is awarded one of those World Cups by FIFA, the sport's governing body.

University of Miami president Donna Shalala, a member of the U.S. bid committee, said of Miami's inclusion: ``We are an international soccer city. Our citizens know the best players in the world. The fans around the world love coming here. I am ecstatic.''

Marcelo Claure, a Miami-based Bolivian cellphone magnate who attempted to bring a Major League Soccer franchise to Miami, was involved in the local bid. He said: ``The soccer lovers in this market deserve to see the World Cup live in their city. People here have always been willing to support soccer, as long as it's world-class soccer. That's the eternal MLS challenge with this market. But bring them the best players in the world, and they will go crazy.''

The league will consist of an NFL like system of two conferences with six teams; the USL Conference and the NASL Conference.

MIAMI - The FIU men's soccer team broke an eight-game losing streak to South Carolina on Saturday night with a 0-0 double-overtime tie against the Gamecocks.

Though the Golden Panthers (5-9-1, 0-5-1) have still not claimed a win in the series, it was the first time since September 20, 1987, that they played to a tie. FIU kept South Carolina's Jimmy Maurer active, forcing the goalkeeper to make six saves throughout the night.

MLS gets a lesson in crest design PDF Print E-mail

Written by Austin Kelley - ESPN Magazine
CrestsBack when we started a recreational soccer team, August Casuals FC, in North Carolina, we helped invent the club's crest. A few local artists dug into the history of heraldry. We put a wolf, a symbol of endurance, in the top corner and a standing lion in the middle to represent the team's kingly future. And while the August Casuals lasted only a few years, its crest is eternal.

So we were happy to see that the newest MLS team, the Philadelphia Union, took its symbolism seriously. Its logo, released the other day, borrows a snake symbol and an awe-inspiring motto from Ben Franklin's political imagery in support of colonial union. ("Jungite aut Perite" translates as "Join or Die.") It has stars for each of the 13 colonies and a traditional state color, as well as the old-time chic that we like in a team badge.
