Barça’s new season under new manager Ernesto Valverde kicked off with disappointing loss against Real Madrid at the Camp Nou. After playing to a scoreless draw in the first half, Barça found themselves down a goal when Gerard Pique’s own goal put Real Madrid ahead five minutes after the restart. Barça got an equalizer when Lionel Messi struck from the penalty spot in the 76th minute after Keylor Navas was ruled to have fouled Luis Suarez. The lead would not last long as Ronaldo would score an equalizer three minutes later. He was booked for celebrating his goal by taking his shirt off. That caution would come back to haunt him when he was shown his second yellow card for diving inside the box three minutes later. Even though Barça had an extra man advantage, it was Madrid who would the third and final goal in the 89th minute courtesy of a brilliant finish from Asensio. Barça have the daunting task of overcoming three away goals and a two goal aggregate deficit when both these side renew acquaintances on Wednesday in Madrid.
