FC Barcelona extended their lead atop the league standings to five points following their 2-1 victory over Getafe. Thanks to Sevilla and Atletico Madrid playing to a 1-1 draw, Barça had a chance to distance itself from the second and third place clubs in Spain with a positive result today. Fortunately, Barça did not squander their golden chance to distance themselves from their rivals when they faced Getafe in Madrid. Lionel Messi and Luis Suárez scored Barça’s lone goals in the first half before Jaime Mata pulled one back just before the interval. Barça managed to hold off Getafe in the second half and were fortunate when Mata failed to score in front of an empty goal in in the 67th minute to keep it 2-1. Barça will have a short to time to celebrate as they shift their attention to Thursday’s Copa del Rey first leg tie against Levante in Valencia.
