Barça to face Manchester United in Champions League Quarter-Finals.

Today’s draw in Nyon saw UEFA pair teams for the Quarter-Finals and Semi-Finals, thereby eliminating an additional draw for the Semi-Finals before the Final at the Wanda Metropolitano on June 1st. Barça were paired with Manchester United while Liverpool will face Porto, Tottenham will face Manchester City and Ajax will face Juventus. If Barça advance, they would face the winner of the Liverpool Porto clash.

Barça were going to host United in the first leg, but this tie was reversed due to UEFA regulations which prevents two teams from the same city playing at home in the last eight. Thus, Barça will travel to Old Trafford for the first leg on April 10 and the second leg will be played at the Camp Nou on April 16. The semifinals will be played on April 30/May 1 and May 7/8. The winners of the semifinal between Tottenham or Man City/Ajax or Juventus will be classed as the home team in the final for operational purposes.

Barcelona and United have some history in Europe, with Barça having a better head to head record; 4 Barcelona wins, 3 United wins, 4 draws. The two sides first met in the 1983-1984 UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup Quarter-Finals where United overturned a 2-0 first-leg loss at the Camp Nou with a 3-0 Old Trafford victory in the second leg. Both sides would meet again in the 1991 Cup Winners’ Cup Final which United won 2-1. Both sides would meet again, but in the 1994-1995 Champions League group stages which saw Barça and United battle to a 2-2 draw at Old Trafford before Cruyff’s Dream Team destroyed Alex Ferguson’s side 4-0 at the Camp Nou in the return leg. Both sides would meet again in the 1998-1999 Champions League group stages where both matches ended in memorable 3-3 draws. United would eliminate Barça in the 2007-2008 Champions League Semi-Finals 1-0 on aggregate. Barça though have had recent memorable success with 2-0 and 3-1 victories in the both 2009 and 2011 Champions League Finals in which Messi scored in both. Only Messi, Pique and Busquets remain from those triumphant teams.
